WHAT WE DO

Asante Children and Food Initiative (ACFI) alleviates hunger and malnutrition among school going children in Uganda by providing nutritious meals and food assistance programs, promoting food security and empowering families through sustainable practices and education

1. Feeding and Nutrition

ACFI provides nutritious meals to school-going children and trains families in sustainable home gardening to improve household food security.

In Uganda, many children go to school on empty stomachs, struggling to concentrate, participate, or even stay enrolled. Hunger not only affects physical growth but undermines education, mental development, and hope for the future. At the core of Asante Children and Food Initiative is a deep belief that every child deserves the chance to thrive and that begins with access to nutritious food through:

School Feeding Program

We provide daily, nutritious meals to school-going children in underserved communities. These meals do more than just fill stomachs, they improve classroom concentration, boost attendance, and keep children in school. For many children, this is the only dependable meal they receive each day. A full plate today means a brighter future tomorrow.

Home Gardening for Nutrition

We train families, especially women and caregivers in sustainable home gardening techniques using locally available resources. By transforming small plots of land into productive gardens, households can grow vegetables and fruits rich in essential nutrients. This not only diversifies diets but also builds resilience against food shortages and rising costs.

Through this approach, we equip families with the knowledge and tools to take charge of their own nutrition, creating long-term food security at the household level.

Our Impact

  1. Children are staying in school longer, healthier, and more energized to learn.
  2. Parents are growing food in their own backyards, improving what they feed their children.
  3. Communities are beginning to view nutrition not as a luxury, but as a right and responsibility

2. Livelihood
To promote economic self-reliance, ACFI offers vocational skills training and supports income-generating activities for caregivers of vulnerable children, helping them sustainably provide for their families.

Behind every well fed child is a caregiver striving to provide, often with limited resources, few opportunities, and overwhelming challenges. ACFI, we know that addressing child hunger requires more than a meal, it requires empowering families, especially the women who bear the burden of care, with the tools to stand on their own.
To break the cycle of poverty and hunger, ACFI equips caregivers of vulnerable children, many of whom are single mothers, grandmothers, or guardians, with practical skills and financial support to help them create sustainable livelihoods through:

Vocational Skills Training
We offer hands-on training in high-demand skills such as tailoring, soap-making, agriculture, and food processing. These skills are chosen based on market needs and local context, ensuring that participants can earn income and meet household needs with dignity.
Income-Generating Activities (IGAs)
Beyond training, ACFI provides start-up kits, small grants, and business mentorship to help caregivers launch or strengthen small businesses. From backyard poultry farms to craft enterprises, these IGAs increase household income and improve families’ ability to afford food, school supplies, and healthcare.

Our Impact

  1. Families that once struggled to feed their children now run sustainable small businesses.
  2. Women who lacked confidence are now skilled entrepreneurs and community leaders.
  3. Children raised in these households benefit from better food, education, and care.

3. Advocacy and Awareness
Ending child hunger is not only about food, it’s about justice, awareness, and action. At ACFI, we believe that real, lasting change happens when communities are empowered to speak out and decision-makers are held accountable for protecting children’s rights. That’s why advocacy and awareness are at the heart of everything we do.

Community-Led Advocacy Networks
ACFI works hand-in-hand with local leaders, parents, teachers, and youth to create strong, grassroots advocacy networks. These groups raise their voices to demand better services, hold institutions accountable, and shape conversations around child nutrition, food access, and school feeding programs. We train local advocates to engage with policymakers, organize dialogues, and participate in budget processes, ensuring that community priorities are heard and acted upon.

Awareness Campaigns
Through school programs, radio talk shows, community events, and print materials, we run educational campaigns on the importance of proper nutrition, especially during early childhood and school years. These campaigns address harmful myths, promote healthy feeding practices, and encourage public support for nutrition-focused policies. Whether it's a mother learning to prepare nutritious meals or a district official pushing for school feeding funding, awareness fuels behavioral change and political will.

Our Impact

  1. Communities are more informed and engaged in conversations around food security and child well-being.
  2. Local government bodies are increasingly responsive to the needs of vulnerable children.
  3. Grassroots advocates are championing nutrition rights and policy change at every level.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

DONATE

In Rakai District, and many parts of rural Uganda, hunger is the leading cause of school dropouts among children. Thousands of children arrive at school each day on empty stomachs, unable to concentrate, perform, or even remain in class. Over time, many simply stop coming. A meal can be the difference between a child staying in school or dropping out entirely. At Asante Children, we believe every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and thrive, not be held back by an empty plate.
